Cove Lions Club hosts golf tournament March 23

The Copperas Cove Lions Club’s 25th annual golf tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. March 23 at the Hills of Cove Golf Course.

There will a four-person scramble; bring your own team or sign up individually.

Entry fee is $50 and includes a meal, green fees and cart.

The cut-off to enter is at 5 p.m. March 20. A raffle will follow the tournament.

There are two levels of sponsorships: gold and silver.

Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee’s

The Copperas Cove Association for Challenged Citizens will host a Flapjack Fundraiser breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. March 2 at Applebee’s, 2525 U.S. Highway 190 in Copperas Cove. Tickets are $8 at the door. For advanced purchase, call (254) 547-5914.

The volunteer group helps empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead ordinary lives.

The association meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at American Legion Post 582 at 910 Industrial Ave. in Cove.

5 Hills Cowboy Church hosts guitar lessons, other events

The 5 Hills Cowboy Church is hosting the following events on a weekly basis: guitar lessons on Mondays at 6:30 p.m.; play date events in the arena Wednesdays at 6 p.m.; roping practice in the arena Fridays at 7 p.m.

The church is having a sweetheart’s trail ride at 1 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call Charlene Cohen at (254) 542-4192.

The church is having a youth garage sale March 2. All proceeds benefit the youth group.

The church is at 139 County Road 4630 in Kempner.

VFW Auxiliary taking entries for scholarship contest

The Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8577 in Copperas Cove is accepting applications for the Junior Girls scholarship contest.

Applicants must have been a member for at least one year and have held an office. Entries must be submitted to the Auxiliary chairman by March 11.

Cove Dems meet Tuesday

The Democrats of Copperas Cove meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Taqueria La Jalisciense, 1217 E. U.S. Highway 190 in Copperas Cove. Linda Angel of the Texas Workforce Commission will speak.

City offices close for Presidents Day

In observance of Presidents Day, all city facilities will be closed Monday. There will be no solid waste collection for residential customers. All residential services will be delayed by one day, as well as brush, bulk and recycle collection. Commercial customers will receive service on their normal schedule. The transfer station will be closed as well.

Legal aid interviews set for Wednesday

Lone Star Legal Aid will conduct client interviews in Coryell County on Wednesday and then every third Wednesday of each month: from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Coryell County Annex at 205 S. Seventh St. in Gatesville and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Justice of the Peace Courtroom, Coryell County Annex at 201 S. Second St. in Copperas Cove.

This is a free service for representation of low-income residents of Coryell County in civil legal matters such as landlord/tenant, Social Security, powers of attorney, wills, probate and more.

Auction, barbecue to help Kempner volunteer firefighters

The Kempner Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual auction and barbecue fundraiser March 2. Dinner will start at 4 p.m. The $5 box sale will be from 3 to 5 p.m., and the auction will begin at 5:30 p.m.

A grant enabled the fire department to purchase a truck but it must raise the rest of the money to convert it into a fire vehicle for fighting brush and wildfires and assist with medical emergencies.

VFW Auxiliary plans schnitzel dinner

The Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8577 will host a valentine’s schnitzel dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hummer Hall. A dinner consisting of schnitzel, German potato salad, green beans, red cabbage, cucumber salad, brotchen, tea and dessert costs $10 per person.

A meal for children 5 to 10 years is available for $5.

Carry-out and door sales are $12. Karaoke will start at 8 p.m.

Coryell County lifts burn ban

Coryell County officials have lifted the ban on outdoor burning.

Residents should contact the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office if they want to conduct a burn. They are reminded that the standard state restrictions remain in effect, including that burns are prohibited if winds are or expected to exceed 23 miles per hour.

ACT provides anger parenting classes

Aware Central Texas provides a parenting class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church; 300 W. Avenue B. Cost is $10 per person.

Cove library hosts children’s programs

The Copperas Cove Public Library will host Toddler Time from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and Story Time from 2 to 2:25 p.m. Thursday.

The Happy Bookers book club meets from 10:30 to noon Wednesday, and there will be a brown bag lunch at noon Tuesday.

The library is at 501 S. Main St.
