The Copperas Cove Lions Club will host its 26th annual golf tournament at 8:30 a.m. March 29 at the Hills of Cove Golf Course. The tournament is the club’s largest fundraising event.
This year members hope to raise funds to assist with several projects, including the Lions camp in Kerrville, which allows children with various handicaps to attend at no costs to families. Linda Lapierre said she is a Lions Club member is because of the camp.
“My daughter is a Type 1 diabetic, and from age 8 to 15, she attended the camp,” she said. “It changed her so much, and she and I learned a lot from the doctors and staff that donated their time there.”
The rest of the camp is geared toward children with disabilities and conditions ranging from asthma to missing limbs.
“Every penny we raise goes directly back into the community,” Lapierre said. “We are all volunteers and our mission is community service, especially youth. In fact, another of our projects is the eyeglasses program, which assists families with kids who can’t afford spectacles.”
This year, the tournament offers four levels of sponsorship, from the bronze level, which costs $50, to the platinum level, at $1,000. There will be a four-person scramble and the entry fee of $50 includes meal, green fees and a cart.
“We are also looking for items to raffle,” Lapierre said. “Every little bit we sell in raffle tickets helps. If you buy a sponsor hole, you’ll get your business sign posted at the hole.”
The first 52 people who sign up will receive a swag bag with a certificate for a free gold club. The tournament is limited to the first 144 players and prizes include a 2014 Dodge Challenger SXT, a flat-screen television, a set of golf clubs and round-trip airfare for two anywhere in the U.S.
