Copperas Cove Food for Families awards were given last week to three Copperas Cove school campuses for collecting thousands of pounds of food for the annual drive.

Fairview/Miss Jewell Elementary School was awarded for being the mega campus to give the highest amount of food — 2,110 pounds.

Copperas Cove High School earned the award for being the high school to collect the most food — 1,534 pounds.

House Creek Elementary School was recognized for being the nonmega campus to give the most food — 1,283 pounds.

In total, the Copperas Cove Independent School District donated 10,239 pounds of food.

Doris McCrary of the Baptist Benevolence Association in Copperas Cove heads up the food drive.

“We are so grateful to the kiddos who got out there and worked,” McCrary said. “We couldn’t do (the drive) without them.”

Food for Families is an annual project for the Boy Scouts, H-E-B, Texas Army National Guard and KWTX-TV. In 2012, groups collected more than 1.4 million pounds of food.
