Patricia Thomas of Copperas Cove volunteers at My Brother’s House Food Pantry.
Tell me about your volunteer work.
I volunteer once a week and as needed at My Brother’s House Food Pantry. I help with the front desk by filling boxes with food for the clients and speak with the clients to help figure out if they have a need other than just food.
I also stock shelves and I’m a secretary and associate member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
As part of my membership for the Copperas Cove Noon Exchange Club, I deliver Meals on Wheels. We pick up meals from the senior center and, based on a predetermined list, we also deliver about nine meals every first and fifth Friday of the month. That gives me an opportunity to get to know people and see if they have any other needs.
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer because I lost my husband three years ago. I don’t like housework and I don’t like to stay at home. I also like helping and giving back to the community, because it’s been good to me. It’s really self-rewarding.
Tell me about your life outside of volunteering.
I am a proud grandmother of two girls and I’m involved with their school projects. I play Bridge. I like to travel and I do it when I get an opportunity. I like gardening and I read a lot.
Are you involved in any other community organizations?
I am also the secretary for the Copperas Cove Noon Exchange Club, a surrogate parent for the special education department at CCISD, and a volunteer with the city of Copperas Cove as a current member of the parks and recreation advisory board and the board of adjustments.
I am also a former member of the animal advisory board and the library advisory board, and I volunteer on the Cove House Homeless Shelter’s board, working to clean up Sunset Lane and Casa Drive.
I also teach Sunday school at Windcrest Nursing Center for the First Baptist Church in Copperas Cove and I am a member of the Copperas Cove Retired Teachers Association. I’m also a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Texas corporate board and the local unit board.
