Not much can compare with the scent of pine when it fills your house during the holidays, but now it’s time to get rid of your Christmas tree.

Copperas Cove Public Information Officer Kevin Keller said curbside customers can recycle their trees at the curb.

“Christmas trees should be placed curbside on residents’ scheduled pickup days. A brush truck will visit the neighborhoods and pick up the trees,” Keller said.

Silvia Rhoads of Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful said the trees picked up by the city will be turned into compost available for purchase at the solid waste facility at a cost of $8.50 for 12 cubic yards. Residents should bring their own tools and storage containers for loading and transporting the mulch.

“We have compost available year-round. But we will see an increase in people coming to get compost in the spring to get their lawns out of the dormant stage —usually around March,” Rhoads said.

“Last year, citizens’ Christmas trees resulted in around 2,000 cubic yards of compost and it should be close to that same amount this year.”

Residents are reminded to remove all decorations and stands from their trees and set them out at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on their designated trash and yard trimmings collection day.

Trees over 6 feet should be cut in half.

If you do not want to wait for your tree to be picked up, it can be dropped off at the Killeen Special Events Center on Jan. 4 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Killeen will also recycle the trees, turning them into mulch. The event is sponsored by the Keep Killeen Beautiful Committee.
