Ministers clarified new plans for the June 2014 Copperas Cove High School baccalaureate service at the Copperas Cove Ministerial Alliance meeting Wednesday.
Traditionally, the annual baccalaureate service had a single message delivered by a speaker, but Mark Kemp, president of the alliance and pastor of First Baptist Church of Copperas Cove, suggested in January that multiple speakers in a panel, skit-like discussion be used instead.
Kemp said the panel’s topical questions would help prepare graduating high school seniors for the faith-related challenges they might face in college.
After members consulted, however, the idea was scaled done to three separate speakers instead of a panel.
“At the most (we now envision) three people,” Kemp said. “One would be a pastor, who would give the charge and the gospel. One would be a scientist, who would tell why he believed the Christian faith was a credible faith, and the other, possibly, would be a younger person, a co-graduate that has gone out in the world and stayed faithful to Christ.”
Kemp said he already had a scientist lined up to possibly speak — his friend, Dr. Jeffrey Browning. Browning is a chemistry professor at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. His research focuses on chemical signaling in neurological disorders.
Kemp said Browning is a passionate Christian in a field where there are few believers.
He often argues about how credible Christianity is as a faith.
Ministerial Alliance members will meet during the month to continue hammering out details.
“It’s evolving well,” said Billy Sanders, pastor of Northpointe Church. “No pun intended.”
The ministers also meditated on Psalm 119:9-11.
Kemp spoke to pastors about making sure they follow a believer’s path and keep a believer’s lifestyle to better advise and lead their congregations.
The Ministerial Alliance meets at noon the first Wednesday of every month at First Baptist Church of Copperas Cove, 300 W. Avenue B.
