Sampson, an almost 2-year-old pooch, got almost the full treatment at an Animal Wellness Fair Saturday in Copperas Cove. He had his annual shots, city registration and a pedicure.

Copperas Cove resident Cindy Holmes, who owns Sampson, took the canine to Copperas Cove Animal Medical Center, which hosts the fair every month.

“Where my mom lives, her dog needs his shots,” said Janice Fowler, Holmes’ daughter. “This is the best thing for us; it doesn’t cost that much.”

The center offers the fair to help meet the needs of the community.

“I don’t remember how long ago we started it, but I know we started it to get people in who usually don’t bring their dogs in,” Office Manager Annette Pinero said. “I like that we see some dogs for the first time and that our established clients also take advantage of the discounted prices.”

A wide range of services is offered during the fair.

“We offer vaccinations, nail trims, heartworm tests, fecal exams and an exam by the veterinarian,” Pinero said. “We’ve been able to catch some ear infections and heartworm cases as well as educate people on the importance of monthly heartworm prevention. The cost of prevention is much cheaper than the cost to cure heartworms.”

Michelle and Nathan Woodworth brought their rescue dog, Lizzy, to the fair to receive her vaccinations.

“We had an appointment to have her spayed on the Sept. 18, but our male got hold of her during her heat cycle,” Michelle Woodworth said. “She’s due for her rabies shot, but we’re not sure if she can get it now ... so we came in today to see if they can give it to her when she’s pregnant.”

Nathan Woodworth said the couple normally uses the Belton Vet Clinic to treat their animals but the wellness fair has made the services more convenient.

The fair is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Saturday of every month. Call the Copperas Cove Animal Medical Center at 254-547-0355.
