GATESVILLE    — Howdy, Copperas Cove. Here is what is going on downrange in Coryell County.

The first county official to set up shop in the newly acquired Extraco building in Gatesville is Pamela Williams, the first director of the new human resources department.

Williams, a lifelong Cove resident, was sorting papers on her desk last week while construction crews and county jail trusties were still busy getting the building ready for the influx of other county office staff from the old courthouse.

She won’t have Internet or phone service until sometime in February but said she is eager to be “up and rolling,” meeting with department heads and helping the county auditor’s staff prepare payroll for Coryell’s 196 employees.

The offices of the county judge, county auditor and county treasurer will be among the new tenants to follow Williams to the new space shortly.

Williams has a fascinating knick-knack in her new office       — an old safe from the Guarantee Bank and Trust Company, which preceded Extraco in the building.

She said the relic from the Mosler Safe Company is a memento of the building’s banking past. The safe features an old style hand-crank opener, looks like it has seen lots of wear and would no doubt have lively stories to tell if it could talk.

Is there anything inside?

“We don’t know,” Williams said with a grin. “We don’t have the combination to open it.”

Apparently, she won’t be using it to make payroll next month.
