After all the sawing and drilling and painting and practicing, the local pine box derby races are finally here.

The third Lampasas Association Royal Racers Pinewood Derby race is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Clear Creek Baptist Church, 3350 Farm-to-Market 2657 in Kempner.

The race is free to the public and open to all youths in grades seven and above, said Brandi Taylor, director of the Girl’s Action group and a volunteer. Lunch is included at the event.

“It’s so much fun for the kids,” she said. “And after the youth races, there’s an adult race where grown-ups can race their own cars just for fun. It’s a family event.”

The pine box derby began as an outreach program but soon grew into a community event where youths can also learn about the church, Taylor said.

Lunch also will be provided, she said. Pine box cars must meet weight and size requirements in order to be eligible to race.

Last year, close to 25 participants raced. This year the event will include a tire-changing station, gliders, boat and airplane races, said Seth Taylor, a derby racer and member of the church’s Royal Ambassadors.

The winner advances to state races at the Belton Expo Center on April 26 and receives a sponsorship to a state race.
