About 40 people attended a Martin Walker Elementary School PTA scrapbooking fundraiser to help children’s programs.

Saturday’s event raised $420 for classroom resources and extracurricular activities expenses. Participants who preregistered paid $10; others paid $15 at the door.

James Steverding, PTA president, said fundraising and volunteering are important to the school and the PTA. He is the parent of a Martin Walker second-grader.

“Everything we do and all the money we raise is for the kids,” he said. “I’ve been trying to get the word out for more parent and community volunteers; anyone that can spare even just an hour or two a week would be making an impact. These kids deserve everything that we had when we were young.”

Steverding said some of the money would go toward on-campus activities meant to replace off-campus field trips lost because of Copperas Cove Independent School District budget restrictions due to state education funding cuts.

Along with some scrapbooking supplies, lunch and child care also were provided at the event.

“We chose to do this particular type of fundraiser because of the high level of public interest in scrapbooking,” said PTA secretary Davina McKee.

As people began arriving at the school with carts full of supplies, it became clear that scrapbooking is a serious hobby for some.

“We have whole rooms at home dedicated to our scrapbooking things,” said Debbra Fausnaugh, who attended with four friends. “We’re here because we love getting together to scrapbook and, of course, we’d like to do anything that will help the kids.”

The next major PTA fundraiser will be the Spring Festival on March 23. There will be games, a bounce house for children and a silent auction.

Anyone wanting to volunteer or local restaurants that may want to donate food to PTA events can contact the front office of Martin Walker Elementary at (254) 547-2283.
