Copperas Cove Public Library’s Summer Reading Program kicks off Tuesday with a little something for everyone.

“It’s a series of reading and activities during a one month period and we have two or three activities every week,” said Library Director Kevin Marsh.

The program includes toddler time for ages 1-3, story time for ages 3-5, interactive and educational programs for ages 5-11, and the teen club for ages 11-16.

Children ages 10 and younger must be accompanied by a parent at all times.

The free program will feature presentations and shows each week, said Library Assistant Martha Dye.

“We have a singing biologist with songs about frogs, and some local people who do a reenactment, dressing up in armor and putting on a combat demonstration,” she said. “We want them to participate in both the reading and presentations to keep their reading skills up and for something fun to do also.”

Dye said each child will receive a log to document the hours they read from books they choose.

If the children reach a certain benchmark, they get prizes.

“After two hours of reading, we give them a prize and some area restaurant coupons, after three hours they get another prize, then after four hours they can come to the pizza party at the end,” Dye said.

“For the teens, we’ll have weekly drawings for prizes.”

Participants can register at the library at 501 S. Main St. anytime during the program but seating is limited for the presentations and shows.

As of Wednesday, Marsh said there was still space available.
