After working side by side to protect the city’s residents, members of Copperas Cove’s police and fire departments met Sunday afternoon to compete in a spirit of friendly competition.

Officers from both departments, as well as members of their families, participated in a charity soccer match. The match took place on fields near Copperas Cove High School, and were free to members of the public.

“Both departments work with each other every day,” said Copperas Cove Police Officer William Hughes. “Today we’re here to have fun and raise some money.”

While admission was free, attendees could offer donations for the game, as well as for food and a “bouncy castle” for children. The money will go to the Copperas Cove Independent School District’s Police Explorers program, which allows teens interested in a career in law enforcement to get training and volunteer in their community.

While Sunday’s game was the first time the two departments faced off on a soccer field, they met previously to play other sports and raise money for other important causes.

Hughes said the two departments participated in a softball game to raise money for fallen Killeen Police Department officer Robert Hornsby, and organized a volleyball match to raise funds for Sgt, Kevin Keller, who was experiencing health problems, in August.

Hughes said participating in events and being active members of the community are an important part of duty for both departments, and shows that despite its status as a growing city, Cove still keeps its small-town values and roots.

“We live here, and we are also citizens in this community,” said Hughes. “We want to show people that this community is important to us.”
