GATESVILLE — Coryell County commissioners this week renewed the county’s agreement with Copperas Cove for the city fire department to provide firefighting and fire protection services in some unincorporated areas of the county.

Cove Fire Chief Burney Baskett, who was sworn into office in July, introduced himself to the commissioners during the Tuesday commissioners court session.

Under the agreement, the Cove fire department is an independent contractor to be paid a maximum of $38,636. The figure was determined by a formula set by the Coryell County Fire Chiefs Association, which also determines the city’s jurisdictional limits and areas of operation. The association represents fire departments in Cove, Gatesville, Evant, Jonesboro, Flat, Levita, Oglesby, Turnersville and Coryell City/Osage.
