Cove EDC projects building renovations done by January


With renovations progressing, Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation anticipates being back in its offices by mid-January.

“It is my estimate, and mine only, that we will take back possession of the building on Jan. 10, and we will start moving in after that,” said Polo Enriquez, the corporation’s executive director. “I suspect that the board will meet for the fourth week meeting in January in our new quarters.”

Construction update

The corporation’s board received a construction update about its 210 S. First St., office on Nov. 21.

Renovations, which started in September, will change the floor plan and add new meeting chambers. The cost of the work is about $245,000.

The building’s heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system was installed, said Jonathan Holden, an EVstudio project manager, the building’s architectural company. The plumbing and framework also is completed.

As of this week, the sheetrock is almost entirely done, Enriquez said. Sidewalk work also is being completed in front of the building to meet the American Disabilities Act.

The contractor, Waco-based Built Wright Construction, gave an estimated completion date of Dec. 26. The EDC should get a certificate of occupancy on Jan. 5.

Council meeting

Enriquez is anticipating about a week to move and will tell the city that the first Copperas Cove City Council meeting can be held in the building in February.

The city agreed to pay about half the cost of renovations in return for using the new chamber for council meetings.

Once renovations are complete, the building will serve both the Cove EDC and the city well, Enriquez said.

“For the first time in the time the EDC has occupied this building, we will have nice quarters to greet our guests,” he said. “Overall it will be a comfortable place to do our work, and something we can open up with pride. This is something that will last far beyond me.”
