Copperas Cove residents are decking their homes in spooky spirit with creepy and creative decorating ideas certain to frighten guests this Halloween.

Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful held its inaugural Halloween home decorating contest and the nominations were frighteningly exciting, organizers said.

“We do the yard of the month and the Christmas decorating contest,” said Silvia Rhoads, KCCB executive director.

“Halloween is kind of different. Some people who decorate for Halloween go all out, and it is really interesting to see their displays.”

Scary nominations received from homeowners, neighbors and residents were judged by a panel of nine KCCB members who were looking for bone-chilling flair.

The judging criteria was the tastefulness of decorations, how the yard looks in the daytime and evening, and no visible code violations. Receiving a certificate and a yard sign denoting the honor of winning the spook-tacular contest were the Scribner family, 2314 Veterans Blvd., first place. Second place went to Tim Churchill at 808 Hill Street, and third place was the Shanahan home at 709 W. Avenue F.

There was a tie for honorable mention between the Mohon family at 1001 S. 23rd St. and the Senseney family at 702 W. Avenue E.

“I think most people that decorate for Halloween and other holidays do it because they enjoy it,” said Liz Sherman, KCCB president. “They take pride in their house looking a certain way.”
