GATESVILLE — Coryell County commissioners raised the pay for reserve deputy constables from $15 to $20 per hour this week and opted to leave the Precinct 1 constable office vacant until a 2014 special election.

The office has been vacant since Jan. 26 when Constable Roger Faught died at his home of an apparent heart attack. Guy Beveridge, a reserve deputy constable in Precinct 2, has been helping with the work load in Precinct 1, Commissioner Jack Wall said.

Wall and Commissioner Justin Latham have been screening applicants for the vacancy, but Wall recommended that the commissioners “do nothing” on the vacancy and let the voters fill the office at the polls in 2014.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace John Guinn “feels comfortable with the deputy they have now,” Wall said, referring to Beveridge.

Guinn recommended the pay increase, Wall said.

If the commissioners’ court were to appoint someone to fill the position, that person would serve until 2014, when there would be a special election to fill the position until 2016, the end of Faught’s term.

In other action, the commissioners turned down a request from the Coryell County Historical Society to reimburse the group $800 it paid for a historical marker for the courthouse.

County Judge John Firth said the county had provided the historical group $2,000 for expenses, of which there is a balance of about $1,100, so the group can pay for the marker from those funds.
