The Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation Open House last week gave residents and local business owners a chance to learn about corporation accomplishments and future endeavors. Created by Polo Enriquez, the entity’s executive director, the annual event aims to educate the public.
“I think it’s a good opportunity to meet with people you don’t see frequently,” said Diana Castillo, a member of the Copperas Cove Independent School District Education Foundation Board. “They’re working hard to bring in new businesses and expand our tax base.”
Those who visited the EDC offices last Friday during the organization’s third annual open house reviewed informational materials, and chatted with staff and board members over refreshments.
The information outlined the corporation’s functions and the findings of small-business surveys conducted this year. Several visitors spent time studying and discussing a map of projects — including the Five Hills shopping center — displayed on a wall.
“We have so many things happening next year. It’s going to be awesome,” said Monica Hull, EDC director of business development.
The H-E-B Plus store is set to open by February. A number of other businesses have shown interest in setting up in the Five Hills shopping center.
Development also continues in the 75-acre Narrows Business and Technology Park and the 25-acre Copperas Cove Business and Professional Park, both south of the shopping center.
“I try to keep up with the community,” Castillo said. “I understand one of their primary goals is to bring in industry, and I saw that Chick-fil-A is coming in.”
Last week, a site map of Five Hills showed stand-alone Chick-fil-A, Chili’s and Panda Express restaurants in the shopping center. The 35,000 square feet of space in the strips being built with the new H-E-B can accommodate between 10 and 20 more occupants. Some shells have been dedicated, but the occupants will not be announced by the developer, Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate Group, until next year.
