The fundraising efforts for Copperas Cove’s upcoming Relay For Life is $43,000 below its goal with less than one month to the event at S.C. Lee Junior High School.
As of Tuesday, 19 teams and 95 participants had raised about $7,000.
“Registration for the relay is still open,” said event chair Beatrice Bagwell. “People can go on our website and donate to either a specific team or just to the event in general.”
As the American Cancer Society’s main fundraiser, proceeds from Relay For Life on June 1 will go toward free programs for cancer patients and their families.
“One of these programs that I know of helps cover medical expenses for individuals who need prosthetics due to cancer,” Bagwell said.
The event also raises public awareness about cancer prevention and treatments.
“You’ll see a lot of people at the event selling various little arts and crafts to help raise additional money for us,” Bagwell said. “Relay participants can also purchase lap beads for $2 or so, depending on the kind of bead.”
The beads are used to help participants keep track of how many laps they’ve completed, Bagwell said.
Food also will be sold at the event.
“We’re also going to have some relay competitions, Zumba and even a DJ,” said Amanda Charbonneau, American Cancer Society community manager of income development for Central Texas. “We’ll be having meetings every single Thursday at Mel’s Burger Joint until the relay.”
The meetings will start at 6 p.m. for team captains and 6:30 p.m. for the committee, but anyone who would like more information about Relay For Life can attend.
Unlike previous years, this year’s relay will take place during the day instead of overnight.
“This year we made it from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in order to make it an all-day event,” Bagwell said.
