Copperas Cove’s young baseball and softball players competed in Major League Baseball’s preliminary round of the Pitch, Hit and Run competition Saturday at City Park.

The competition tests young athletes’ baseball and softball skills. The first round was organized by Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation.

“It’s a whole lot of fun to get everybody out here,” said Parks and Recreation director Andy Cedillo, who took part in the Pitch, Hit and Run competition when he was 10. “I remember doing this when I was a kid, and that was 40 years ago.”

The competition scores young ballplayers based on how fast they run, how accurate they throw and how far they can hit.

Winners from the Copperas Cove event advance to Round Rock. If they perform well in Round Rock, they move to the regional finals, conducted at major league ball parks across the country.

The best competitors from the country will head to the All Star Game in New York for the finals.

While excited about the possibility of advancing, contestants on Tuesday were glad to take to the diamond to test their skills.

“I had fun,” said Rachel Pierce, 13, who competed in the events. “I could have done better, but I had fun, and that’s what it’s all about — having fun.”

Some contestants have entered the competition for many years. Cade Glaze, 10, competed in Pitch, Hit and Run since he was 7 and felt like he did “pretty good” this year.

Children competed in the following categories: 14 and younger, 12 and younger, 10 and younger and 8 and younger. In 2008, softball was introduced; now there are boy and girls divisions for all age groups.
