If you’re ever wanted to learn how to build a Pine Box Derby car, now’s the time. And, if you ever wanted to actually race one — you’ll get your chance next month. Here’s how.

The Kempner Oak Hill Baptist Church will host a workshop on how to build derby cars at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church on 134 Country Road 4931, in Kempner.

The car-building event is free to the public and open to all ages.

“It’s a community church event that’s fun for the kids,” said Brandi Taylor, the director of the Girl’s Action group and a volunteer. “It started with the church but has since grown and now incorporates several local churches.

“This is our second year doing it, and boys and girls can participate. The objective is to get kids out and enjoying themselves and introduce them to the church,” she added.

But that’s no all. The Pine Box Derby races will be March 22 at the Clear Creek Baptist Church at 3350 Farm-to-Market 2657 in Kempner. Activities begin at 10 a.m. and the event is expected to last approximately four hours.

“Trophies will be awarded in three categories,” said Taylor. “There will the boys, K-6, the girls, K-6, and a teen group prize. Lunch will also be provided.”
