On April 12, Michael Cleghorn, Public Works director, attended the annual Texas Solid Waste Association of North America conference in San Antonio. While there, he was presented with and accepted an excellence award on behalf of the city for the single stream recycling program.

The process consisted of submitting an application that detailed a specific project, submitting photographs of the project, and addressing specific evaluation criteria for a project implemented in 2016. The information was sent to the TxSWANA committee for review and nomination.

The awards are designed to recognize Texas communities for planning and implementing programs that enhance environmental quality through increased recycling, material recovery and improved methods of managing the collection and disposal of waste and recyclable material. With this recognition, TxSWANA hopes to encourage other cities to adopt such programs as a way of advancing solid waste management throughout Texas.
