The Copperas Cove Morning Exchange welcomed Burney Baskett as Cove’s new Fire Chief on Wednesday.
Baskett comes to Copperas Cove from South Padre Island, but previously served in Hillsboro and Arlington.
He assumed the reigns of Fire Chief of Copperas Cove Monday with more 30 years of fire fighting experience, including several years as the Hillsboro and South Padre Island chief.
He has experience with building new fire stations, which will be beneficial to the city since two new fire stations are being planned.
“In all fairness, when we built a new station in South Padre, that was because Hurricane Debbie took the old one away,” Baskett said. “I’m just glad we didn’t have to wait for something like that to happen here.”
Baskett said one of the reasons to moved back to Central Texas was be closer to family. Both his and his wife, Michelle’s family are from the area.
“I get asked why I would leave South Padre Island,” Baskett said, “and the truth is driving eight hours or more to get anywhere for family functions was tough. Here we are no more than two hours away from anything. Although I need to get used to the low humidity here, I’m always dehydrated.”
The Morning Exchange also unveiled plans for its 15th annual charity golf tournament scheduled for Oct. 12 at The Hills of Cove golf course.
The tournament is the primary fundraiser for the club, and hole and team sponsorships are available. Prizes will be made available if players can get a hole in one on specific holes, and door prizes will also be there.
Businesses and individuals interested in participating in the tournament or sponsoring a team or hole should contact Mark Peterson at (254) 371-9649 for more information.
