VFW post throwing Halloween festival
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3393, located at Boys Ranch Road in Kempner, is having a Halloween Festival from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 27.
There will be a costume contest by age group (12 and younger), and refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

City seeking vendors for Halloween event
Copperas Cove’s annual Safe Trick or Treat event is from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at City Park. Games for children and refreshments will be provided for free.
Spaces for vendors and sponsors are still available. Vendors are asked to sign up at the parks office and provide candy at the event.
Sponsors also may take part in the event and their names will be displayed on the parks banner.

German Sausagefest scheduled for Nov. 3
German Sausagefest will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 3. Feast on an authentic German-style meal and listen to live music. The prices for a dinner are $5.50 for children and $8 for adults. Bulk sausage is sold at $6 a pound. Take-out dinners will be available.
The sausagefest will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church, 518 E. U.S. Highway 190 in Copperas Cove.

YMCA set to join Halloween fun
The YMCA will host a fitness fright night from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26. This event is free and for the whole family.
There will be Zumba, a boot camp, games and activities for the kids.
On Oct. 29 the YMCA will take children from the YMCA center to Dave’s Ice House. The cost is $7 and includes the trip to the haunted house and Black Meg.

The Copperas Cove class of 1967 is planning its 45th reunion from 3 to 9 p.m. Nov. 10 at Five Hills BBQ, located on U.S. Highway 190.
All classmates are asked to reach out to alumni to spread the word.
The classes of 1966 and 1968 are welcome to attend.
Auxiliary announces nursing scholarship
The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8577 announces its participation in the nursing scholarship program for the Department of Texas Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW.
This year the state of Texas will give out three scholarships. First place is $2,000, second place $1,500 and third place $1,000. The winners will be invited to the department’s convention in June to receive the scholarships and be introduced to the Great Ladies Auxiliary of Texas.
Directors of nursing education schools have been provided with the details and requirements by the state chairman.
Any student who is accepted as a nursing senior for the fall of 2013 academic session qualifies as long as the following applies: must be attending a Texas college or university, must be a U.S. citizen and must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Submit a double-spaced typed essay (300 words) on “Why a Nursing Career?” The deadline is May. Application forms and instructions may be obtained from Karen Kaylor at (254) 547-5619.
After receiving the completed application and essay with required documentation, the auxiliary will submit it to the state nursing chairman
