COPPERAS COVE — Residents will soon see six new police and fire vehicles cruising the streets after council members approved about $212,620 in funding Monday.

The contract was awarded to Dallas Dodge and Caldwell Country Chevrolet. The city came in about $41,000 under budget. The funding will allow for the purchase of five police pursuit vehicles and one fire command vehicle.

“The capital outlay plan calls for the cars to be replaced every five years ... the patrol unit,” said Lt. Jeff Stoddard, explaining the routine purchase.

Each vehicle ranges in cost from $38,000 to $105,000.

“The only real change to (the cars) is the command cabins in the back of the SUVs. ... It has come in very handy as far as storage goes,” Stoddard said.

Stoddard said the back cabins allow police to easily store and access breaching tools, shields and emergency medical equipment that smaller patrol cars don’t carry.

According to the city’s capital outlay plan, patrol cars are expected to last for about 100,000 miles and seven years. The city will buy two new Dodge Chargers and four Chevrolet Tahoes. The new SUVs are replacing older, sedan-style Ford Crown Victorias, which were purchased in 1999.

In other business, the council:

Authorized City Manager Andrea Gardner to pursue $6,755 in uncollected lease payments from Full Throttle Grill, which recently vacated the Hills of Cove Golf Course facility without notifying the city, according to city documents.

Decided to begin interviewing candidates to fill a open city secretary position. The position was vacated Nov. 16 after Jane Lees retired. Mariela Altott, senior court clerk, was appointed as interim city secretary Nov. 22 and is the acting city secretary. The city has received 354 applications for the position and will begin scheduling interviews in July.
