Kenn Smith, the Place 5 Copperas Cove councilman, resigned his position.
On Wednesday, Smith voluntarily provided the Herald with an unsigned copy of his resignation letter. It said though he was honored to have served the city’s residents, he felt compelled to resign and did so with great regret.
“A question about my ethics and integrity has been raised by a senior city staff member, and I do not wish to continue to serve under a cloud of suspicion,” the letter stated. “The question raised was unfounded and baseless but the seed of mistrust has been planted and isn’t going to die.”
Smith was elected in June 2010 and was re-elected in November.
The city had no comment on the issue, however, city spokesman Kevin Keller said Smith’s resignation must be accepted by council before it takes effect. The next meeting is Tuesday, at which time the council will determine whether to formally accept Smith’s resignation.
Smith said he provided the letter before an open request for information was fulfilled because Cove residents deserved to know what was going on.
