GATESVILLE — The Coryell County Commission continued this week to tussle with fitting an expanding government into the confines of the historic courthouse built in 1897.

Commissioners on Monday discussed where to allocate office space for Michael Hull, the new director of the Pretrial Services department who starts Oct. 1.

Efforts to reassign office space for two of District Clerk Janice Gray’s employees to make room for the new department drew strong disagreement from Gray, who said the proposed move would jeopardize the confidentiality of juvenile records.

The commissioners tabled the matter pending a closed executive session to discuss “real estate matters,” but took no action.

The commissioners also voted to renew an inter-local agreement with McLennan County to house Coryell County jail inmates. The rate agreed to was $46 per inmate per day, a 50-cent increase over the current pact. The agreement must be approved by McLennnan County.

Because the Coryell jail population exceeds state jail standards, the overflow inmates must be housed outside the county. Milam and Limestone counties are the first two options, respectively, for housing inmates. McLennan County would be the third choice or “the backup to the backup,” as County Judge John Firth called it.

On the recommendation of Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden, commissioners voted to continue the burn ban originally set Aug. 6.

“We ought to leave (the burn ban) on until we get some rain,” Vaden told the commissioners.
