After Monday evening’s meeting to discuss the future of the Copperas Cove Boys & Girls Clubs brought nearly 20 people to the Copperas Cove Public Library, some hope may be on the horizon for the organization.
A previous meeting on Feb. 15 saw a small turn-out, with Jon Charles, chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Texas, explaining the need faced by the Cove clubs.
In addition to losing the lease on the Boys & Girls Clubs location at Fairview/Miss Jewell Elementary School as of May 31, the group was down to two active board members.
“We need at least eight board members to maintain the nonprofit status,” Charles said at that first meeting.
The need to find a new location to serve the many elementary-aged children taking advantage of the low-cost after-school program at Fairview/Miss Jewell, Jessica Smith, branch director, said, “I’d be happy with 4,500 square feet.”
As of Tuesday, Charles reported having “about 8 to 10 new potential board members. We have some leads on a new location, but continue to look for a new home for the club.”
