A Copperas Cove Police Department sergeant joins the ranks of several other agency officials who graduated from a leadership command college.

Sgt. Jeremy Alber was the most recent of numerous police officers who attended and graduated from a nine-week course put on by the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, said Sgt. Kevin Keller, spokesman for the Cove PD.

“Most of our upper administration have all attended this, and we are currently working on getting all sergeants and corporals through the program,” he said.

According to a department news release, the program provides law enforcement administrators and executives with the skills necessary to effectively manage police agencies and deliver a high level of service to their community.

It focuses on several areas, including leadership, professional ethics, integrity, communication and personnel management.

“One of the biggest things they are learning out of this is leadership,” Keller said. “It kind of formulates a base skill... which we can bring that back and help us work together as a team.”

Learning about leadership allows for people in the department to enter a command role when necessary but also creates a sense of structure by letting those who may not be commanding understand the other person’s leadership perspective.

Keller said other members of the department will enroll into the program in the future, each of which takes the program at no cost to the city.

The program is funded through a surcharge on criminal court costs, the release stated.

While the course is headquartered at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, officers also attend a week’s worth of instruction at Texas A&M University in College Station and Texas Woman’s University in Denton.
