Employed for 35 years with the city, Daniel Hawbecker, a water distribution superintendent, was recognized with a tenure that was more than double that of four other city employees recognized Tuesday.

“This is an employee that if he was on vacation and a resident calls with a problem, he goes out and fixes it,” City Manager Andrea Gardner said of Hawbecker. “He is a phenomenal employee. ... It is employees like him that makes me want to stay here.”

Hawbecker received a 35-year service award in front the Copperas Cove City Council and was joined by four other employees.

Leonel Gaujardo, a golf course mechanic, was recognized for serving 10 years. Gaujardo retired several years ago, but came back to work part time.

“He is a dedicated employee and the reason we keep our costs down,” Gardner said, quoting an evaluation of Gaujardo.

Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician John McGuire also received recognition for 10 years of service.

Katy Wolf, an administrative assistant for the fire department, and Rick Counter, a police detective, received five-year recognitions.

“Katy does a good job working with the community and is always willing to take on extra assignments,” Gardner said, quoting Wolf’s last evaluation.

Counter shows a similar dedication to the city by being a proactive and hardworking police officer, Gardner said.

“Thank you for your dedication to our residents,” she said to all employees who had a five-year anniversary in September.
