Cove's new fire chief coming from South Padre

COPPERAS COVE — Copperas Cove last week offered its top fire department position to South Padre Island Fire Chief Burney Baskett.

City Manager Andrea Gardner confirmed on Monday that Baskett was the city’s finalist for the position, but said the position will not official be filled until his background check is completed by the city.

Baskett has already announced his resignation in South Padre, where he served five years, according to the Port Isabel-South Padre Press.

    I think we're overlooking obvious good talent within our city. We should be filling the position from within.
