Copperas Cove Walmart store manager Cirilo Lopez demonstrates how customers can use the Mobile Express Scanners to pay for their purchases.

The Copperas Cove Walmart is saving shoppers time with new technology.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Feb. 23 at the Copperas Cove Walmart for the store’s new Pick-up Tower. The event was organized in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce.

With fewer than 100 Pick-up Towers in the entire company, this is the only Pick-up Tower in the area, according to Cove Walmart store manager Tania Culpepper.

It’s hard to miss, being about 16 feet tall and bright orange.

The tower is designed for convenience, efficiency and saving customers time. Separate from the free grocery pickup, the service — also free-of-charge — is simple.

First, customers shop online for any desired nongrocery items, many of which are discounted when ordered via the internet. A personal shopper at the Cove Walmart will fill the order and place it in the tower, or a separate locker if an item is oversize.

The customer will receive an email with a barcode when the order is ready. Upon arriving at the store, the customer scans the barcode at the Pick-up Tower, which will dispense the neatly packaged order.

The pickup process takes about one minute.

Stephanie Moore, e-commerce assistant manager, noted that the tower holds up to 297 items.

Another innovation at the Cove Walmart involves new hand-held scanners as part of Mobile Express Scan & Go.

Store manager Cirilo Lopez demonstrated how that process works, which is another time saver.

At the store’s doors, customers select a hand-held scanner from the kiosk. As they shop, each item selected is scanned — including fresh produce, which can be weighed and inputted into the scanner.

Once the shopper is finished, “Scan and Go” self-checkout stations are equipped for the scanners to download information via a QR code on the screen. The total amount due is displayed and customers can pay with credit card, cash or other options.

“Customers don’t have to wait in line,” Lopez said. “It’s very quick and very simple.”

As they leave the store, customers return the scanner to the kiosk.

This Mobile Express shopping system is the first to be installed in a Walmart in this area, Lopez noted.

The Cove Walmart offers free online grocery service, as well.

Culpepper encourages customers to try that option, noting that using the code WOWFRESH online will give them $10 off the order.
