A Copperas Cove man faces 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of assault by a Coryell County jury Tuesday, according to a news release from District Attorney Dusty Boyd.

Joe Lee Hodges was sentenced to the maximum sentence for assault by occlusion. He was awarded the maximum sentence because of a previous felony conviction, Boyd said.

On Oct. 6, police responded to a call in which Hodges, 54, was choking a victim, according to the release. An argument led to the assault, Boyd said, and Hodges placed both of his hands around the victim’s throat, preventing the ability to breath.

The case was overseen by Judge Grant Kinsey in the 440th District Court in Gatesville. The trial began Jan. 22.
