Cove robbery

The Murphy USA gas station in Copperas Cove was robbed Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016.

A trio of criminals used a stolen van to break into a gas station and steal thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes Sunday night, police said.

The group stole one of two day care vans from the Family Thyme Learning Center parking lot at 903 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

They then drove to Murphy USA at the Wal-Mart on East Business U.S. Highway 190, broke in and stole $6,500 worth of cigarette cartons, according to Sgt. Martin Ruiz with the police department.

A magnetic sign from the day care center was left inside the store during the heist, Ruiz said.

Following the trip to Murphy’s, the thieves took a trip to a Dairy Queen, where they broke a window and caused some damage, but only small items were reported missing, including women’s makeup and face powder, police said.

It was unknown if the burglars obtained the keys to the van, or whether they started it some other way.
