Copperas Cove police arrested an 18-year-old man Sunday in connection with an attempted robbery Dec. 19.
Police said Dezay Cooks was one of multiple suspects in a robbery attempt of a male victim attempting to trade for a pair of shoes.
“It happened close to the apartment complex where the victim lived,” Cove police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Miller said. “They were going to trade shoes but the suspects did not show up with shoes. They verified the victim had the shoes and said they had to go get the other shoes and started to drive off. They stopped the car a few spots down and the victim approached them because he thought they were experiencing car trouble.”
Miller said Cooks then pulled a handgun and fired a single shot at the victim as he fled. Police said the victim was unharmed.
Following the shooting, the victim helped police identify multiple suspects, including Cooks. Police then issued a warrant for Cooks’ arrest.
On Sunday, police spotted Cooks driving a vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. During the stop, police found marijuana in the vehicle.
Cooks was arrested and arraigned on charges of aggravated robbery and possession of marijuana and was assigned a total bond of $53,000.
Cooks is being held in the Coryell County Jail.
Miller said two to three other individuals were involved in the incident but did not provide details because the investigation is ongoing.
