Central Texas College Enactus students began maintenance work at several Cove House residences last week.

“The Enactus group has helped with the food drive program and the clothing project; selecting Cove House (for a community project) only seemed to be a natural fit,” said Bruce Vasbinder, a CTC spokesman.

Smaller infrastructure projects began last Thursday and Friday in the men’s house, said Ben Tindall, Cove House’s executive director. Work will continue on the women’s house, the family house and the office in the next few weeks as materials become available.

The Copperas Cove-based homeless shelter provides living arrangements for displaced individuals and families for about two weeks while they search for work or a new home.

Enactus provided new appliances such as freezers, a refrigerator and dryers, Tindall said. The group also will caulk windows, fix doors, replace energy-efficient light bulbs and check the heating and air conditioning system.

Enactus decided to do the work at Cove House after receiving a $2,000 Lowe’s community improvement grant, Vasbinder said.

Vasbinder said Enactus students give seminars at Cove House throughout the year during which they teach residents about job readiness, resume writing and interviewing.

“When the Enactus organization came to us and said they wanted us to receive the grant, I was completely surprised,” Tindall said. “We are blessed to have this relationship with the Enactus group. This grant will help us develop homes into a safe environment; this means a lot for those who are staying here.”
