More than 40 residents gathered Feb. 18 to recognize staff members and volunteers of the Copperas Cove Public Library at the annual Friends of the Library recognition dinner at Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant.
Recognized were: Sarah Parker-Andrews, Jamie Dye, B.J. Johnson, Cathy Purvis, Anita Singly, Melissa Barlow, Donna Eosze, Diane Miller, Cherri Shellnutt and Marian Wendling.
Kevin Marsh, the new library director, was honored, along with his staff: Valerie Reynolds, Martha Dye, Anita Schultz, Marcie Jordan, Ryan Haverlah, Joan Kelley, Kathy Jenkins and Angie McConnaughey.
Copperas Cove Mayor John Hull and his wife, Debra, a member of the Copperas Cove Library Advisory Board, and Mark Peterson, councilman, were distinguished guests at the dinner, along with Becky Johnson, a library volunteer who worked for two years as a library employee before transferring to another position in the city.
“Anyone can volunteer at the library through the Copperas Cove city government,” Johnson said.
Friends of the Library is dedicated to upholding public library operations, said treasurer Susan Ayers.
When municipal budgets are unable to provide extra services for the library, charitable organizations such as Friends provide funding and support for library projects that encourage reading.
Many Friends members have careers centered on reading and education.
“I missed 40 days of school and was still able to graduate due to the efforts of my teacher,” said Ayers, who has a doctorate and supports library activities.
Pat Hutchinson, a retired teacher and college instructor, and her husband, a retired Army veteran, also support the library.
“I was an eighth-grade teacher most of my career,” Hutchinson said, adding she worked as an instructor at Central Texas College before retiring.
The Copperas Cove Public Library is at 501 S. Main St. For more information about Friends of the Library, call the library at (254) 547-3826.
