The Copperas Cove High School Copperettes Dance Team and Copperas Cove Junior High and S.C. Lee Junior High School Starlettes Dance Teams are kicking up their heels, standing on their toes, twirling in the air and pulling out all the stops to get high marks from the judges at this weekend’s American Dance/Drill Team Contest in Georgetown.
This is the Copperettes’ third year to attend and compete at this contest and the Starlettes’ first year to attend, although all teams are well seasoned competitors. The Copperettes’ dances feature American songs from the musicals “West Side Story” and “Singin’ in the Rain” as well as classics such “At Last” by Etta James, “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes. The Copperettes will feature team, officer, soloists and a duet at the competition and Starlettes will showcase their team routines.
Copperettes Capt. Lily Sallfors is most looking forward to performing “Team Military.”
“This is our strongest category and I feel good about it. I enjoy our Officer Jazz too because we get into it. We bring a lot of energy to the choreography and it’s just fun to dance to,” Salfors said. “I’m also excited for my solo. I feel like I’m ready this year and I can’t wait to showcase my personal style and technique for how I perform as a dancer.”
The Copperettes Dance Team is under the direction of Samantha Selby. The Copperas Cove Junior High Starlettes are under the direction of Desiree Kachel, and the S.C. Lee Starlettes are under the direction of Jessica Eaker.
