COPPERAS COVE — Members of the Copperas Cove Independent School District’s Board of Trustees are a step closer to creating a career and technical education campus for students.

Trustees held a special workshop Wednesday to review preliminary site plans for the multimillion-dollar campus, which were presented by the Cove-based architectural engineering firm EV Studio.

The campus would operate similarly to the Killeen Independent School District’s Career Center, and offer Cove students the opportunity to take classes and earn certifications in industries such as construction, automotive technology, health services, cosmetology and culinary arts.

While Killeen built its center from scratch, the preliminary plans in Cove ISD show the campus will be housed in a complex of facilities on Avenue E.

According to plans presented Wednesday, the project would contain a mix of new construction, as well as renovation of buildings currently at the site, some of which were built in the 1940s and 1950s. Those facilities would need to be brought up to current building code, and house special classrooms and equipment for the various career programs, Superintendent Joseph Burns said.

“That’s going to be pretty invasive work,” Burns told board members.

While the facilities would be heavily renovated, Burns assured board members plans for the center would not include the demolition of Avenue E’s historic buildings, including the original schoolhouse that was constructed in the 1890s.

“The district would not advise that, because it is of historical and architectural significance,” Burns said.

According to the initial plans presented Wednesday, the project would likely be broken up into phases. Preliminary cost estimates for the first phase were projected at $3.7 million.

The board took no formal vote on the site plans at the workshop.
