The Copperas Cove Farmers Market kicked off its 20th year of operation Saturday with local planters setting up booths at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8577.

“It don’t cost a lot, and I can make a dollar at it,” said farmers market founder Curtis Hollman, who retired from the Army in 1989. “I needed a hobby, and this is it.”

“I enjoy being out in the garden,” he said. “And this is a great way to get out and share with the community what we can grow.”

Along with vegetables, Hollman had a few flower bouquets for sale.

“My wife used to own A&L Florists,” Hollman said. “The flowers still grow in the yard, so we pick them and make some bouquets.”

“We lost a lot of things in the freezes these past two weeks,” Hollman said. “Peas, beans, tomatoes, we hope we can have some later; people really love the local tomatoes.”

This is vendor Kathleen Woodby’s second year at the farmers market.

“I enjoy growing vegetables,” she said. “I ended up with an overabundance. I grow some things that are more unusual than others. Like Perilla. It’s used in Hawaiian and Korean cooking. Lately, people have been really interested in it. I’m also trying my luck at watermelon.”

The late freezes damaged Woodby’s plants, too. “I have a small greenhouse, so I’m hoping that I can recover from the losses from the late frost,” she said.

A retired member of the Austin Police Department, Woodby took up gardening because she “had to do something to keep busy.”
