Friends of the Copperas Cove Library on Monday heard updates on library programs and finalized plans for the May 3 book sale.

Peggy Fleet, president of the group, said funds generated from the book sales are added to the general fund that supports the library.

“Many people look forward to the sale where the books will be at a minimal cost,” Fleet said.

Muffin Monday

The library staff celebrated the success of Muffin Monday, where patrons were treated to a free muffin when they checked out material and updated their library cards.

H-E-B donated 50 muffins in a variety of choices to help the library with the project.

“The free muffins generated the largest one day update of library cards at our library,” said Kevin Marsh, library director. “Offering the muffins motivated our regular patrons who have not updated their contact information in a while to do so at that time.”

Items removed

Marsh reported the library has cleaned house by getting rid of unpopular items to make room for newer books.

“We weeded out sets containing cassettes and adult VHS tapes due to non-circulation of the items,” Marsh said, adding that VHS tapes will eventually be replaced by CDs or DVDs.

“We retained the VHS sets for children since they are still being circulated.”

Friends of the Library provides necessary supplies and equipment for daily library operations and are currently researching companies that sell display shelving since most local office supply stores do not carry what the library needs, Fleet said.

“Shelving with casters is preferred, which will allow the library staff flexibility when they make display changes.”

Guests Beverly and Karl Kittinger of the Killeen Friends of the Library suggested the price quote for shelving include inside delivery and set up.

“There will be additional costs for wood shelving due to its quality and appearance,” Kittinger said.
