Taylor Jacks

WACO — Taylor “Lois” Jacks, of Gatesville, was selected as a 2013 Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo Sweetheart, event officials announced in a news release this week.

Jacks, 16, a Gatesville High School sophomore a varsity cheerleader, is active in 4-H, plays trumpet in the marching band, plays volleyball and runs track, said her mother, Alisia Meharg of Gatesville.

Jacks is one of 60 Sweethearts picked from 104 young women competing for the designation, the news release stated.

“The 2013 Sweetheart competition was extremely competitive again this year,” Karen Kirkpatrick, chairwoman of the Sweetheart Committee, said in the release “We are excited to have these ladies as part of the team.”

Sweethearts promote, support and represent the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo by selling discounted fair and rodeo tickets and/or sponsorships, serving as public relations ambassadors for the event and volunteering 100 hours of community service, the release stated.

More than $7,000 in scholarships will be awarded to Sweethearts this year.

The rodeo and fair is Oct. 3-12 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco.
