GATESVILLE — Annabelle Barrington, a Gatesville High School senior, will represent the Gatesville Boys & Girls Club at the State Youth of the Year competition in Austin in April.
“Annabelle is an amazing young woman,” said Gatesville club Director Julie Hudson, who nominated Barrington for the competition.
“She is at the club every day after school and was here all summer,” Hudson said. “The kids love her.”
Barrington won local and area Youth of the Year competitions to advance to the state finals, Hudson said.
“Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year recognition is the highest honor a Club member can achieve,” according to a news release from Brian Jones, director of operations for the organization.
Founded in 1947, the competition recognizes young people “for service to their club and community, academic performance and contributions to their family,” the release stated.
The daughter of Jim and Sherry Barrington, Annabelle is vice president of the Keystone Club at the Gatesville Boys & Girls Club, active in 4-H and is a member of the Gatesville High School Dazzlers dance team, Hudson said.
Barrington wrote two essays to qualify for the competition, one about what the Boys & Girls Club means to her, the other about her future plans, which include attending Central Texas College to pursue a career in Special Needs Education.
