Golfers from Copperas Cove and the surrounding communities took part in a fun, relaxing, and charitable round of golf Saturday morning at the Hills of Cove Golf Course in Copperas Cove.

The daylong tournament raised money for Special Olympians from Copperas Cove and Killeen. It provided a fun and competitive outing for area golfers.

“The turnout today has been fantastic,” said Jessica Boucher, owner of Full Throttle Grill and tournament organizer. “We have 26 golfers playing, quite a few sponsors, and have already raised over $2,000 with our sponsors alone. Today has gone pretty well.”

Boucher and her fiancé, Marty Lloyd, raised funds to send area Special Olympians to compete at the state meet.

“My fiancé’s son has Down syndrome, and when we watched him compete at Special Olympic competitions, we always noticed some participants from the area who would win but could not afford to send themselves to the state meet,” Boucher said. “That’s when we got the idea to help raise money for them; we want to do whatever we can to help get these kids to state.”

Like Boucher, other tournament organizers felt the importance of the event.

“It’s a shame that these kids who qualify for the state meet can’t go,” said Davis Dewald, Hills of Cove head golf pro and tournament coordinator. “That’s why this event is so important … we want to keep this going every year.”

The tournament offered participants with many prizes and contests.

“We have about four or five holes with hole-in-one prizes, including a flat-screen television and an $8,000 home entertainment package,” Boucher said. “We also have many raffle prizes including golf shirts, a golf bag, putters, lessons, and even a cash prize for the team that comes in first today … we want everyone to have a good time today.”
