Representatives from the city, local churches and help agencies got together at Grace United Methodist Church Monday for the Greater Copperas Cove Community Agency Network meeting.

Led by director Joseph Solomon, the final meeting of the year focused on introductions, old business, new business, and plans for the upcoming holiday season.

Mayor Pro Tem Frank Seffrood regularly attends GCCCAN meetings to get an idea and a feeling for what’s going on in the community, he said.

Charitable organizations like the Refuge Corporation help bridge the gap of have and need to ensure that life is more complete for everyone, Seffrood said.

GCCCAN is an initiative of the Refuge Corporation.

Its mission is to network and use existing community resources to meet the basic needs of the communities in the neighboring counties, said volunteer coordinator Constance Smith.

Establishing communication between agencies helps provide more needs based resources while eliminating any double dipping, said Pamela Johnson, case manager for the Refuge Corporation Homeless Shelter.

“A lot of these agencies may offer the same things that we have and sometimes people will try to take advantage so we work together to see who we’re helping which helps a lot.”

Guests were asked to introduce themselves and give a brief overview of their organization along with any announcements.

Phyllis Jones, education chair for the Texas State NAACP, noted the importance of networking and sharing with local agencies to promote education, among other services.

Sgt. 1st Class John Valentine of Operation Once in a Lifetime and others offered their services to aid in the Refuge Corp.’s 19th annual Community-Wide Thanksgiving Basket Benefit.

The event helps feed hundreds of families throughout the Greater Copperas Cove Area, Solomon said.
