More than 500 veterans and their families were honored Saturday at the fifth annual Independence Day Celebration hosted by Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans at the Copperas Cove Civic Center.

Retired 1st Sgt. Jonathan Haywood, president of the nonprofit organization, said its goal is to help veterans whenever they can and honoring them on the Fourth of July is just one way to do that.

“The purpose of this is to service the (older) veterans for the holidays, because a whole lot of these people won’t get the chance to have dinner with their family or loved ones,” Haywood said.
