Every year around Lent, many Knights of Columbus all over the country host all-you-can-eat fish fries to support local and national charities and the local chapter in Cove is no exception.
For more than 25 years, the Knights of Columbus has held fish fry events every first Friday of the month.
But during Lenten season, local residents can attend the special event each week.
Knights of Columbus Treasurer John Drew said the fish fry is a time of togetherness for “our brethren and their families.”
“Lent is a day of purity and fasting,” he said. “Up until the day of Lent (Catholics) don’t eat meat on Fridays. Fish is not considered a meat, and that’s why we do these fish fries.”
More than 45 families and local patrons came by Knight’s Hall on April 4 to show their support.
Participants were asked to bring a donation of a canned food item to support local soup kitchens.
The all-you-can-eat dinner consisted of fried catfish, hushpuppies, cole slaw and an array of desserts.
Connie Hernandez of Cove has attended the event for more than three years.
“This is by far the best fish I have ever tasted,” she said. “I recommend anyone who does not like fish to come here and try it.”
The food is prepared, cooked and served by members of the Knights of Columbus Council 6658, such as Cove resident Deacon Fred Jones, a 40-year Knight.
“We do this for the community for unity,” he said. “Bringing people together … and most of all to show our town that we do care.”
The fish fries will be held every Friday through the April and then the first Friday of each month at the Knights Hall, 6830 Farm-to-Market 2657, Copperas Cove. Call 254-547-1492.
