The Copperas Cove Noon Lions Club met for their regularly scheduled meeting at noon Tuesday at the Lil-Tex restaurant.

On the agenda was the nomination and discussion of awards.

The club voted to award the distinguished Melvin Jones Fellow to Lion Terry Thompson who will receive his 30-year pin at the April 13 breakfast.

The breakfast will be held at the 2X3 Convention in Killeen.

A donation of $1,000 will be given to the Lion’s Club International Foundation in Thompson’s honor, and will help stamp out measles in children.

The meeting continued with the discussion and planning of the March 29 golf tournament, which is the only fundraiser the club hosts annually.

The funds raised will be invested back in the community to serve children.

Invited guest speaker Michael Dewees, director of Communities in Schools, told the club his organization’s goal is to prevent high school dropouts and help children in crisis.

Students qualify for services by meeting at least one of three criteria: at-risk by TEA standards, on free or reduced lunches and/or in a crisis situation (death, divorce or deployment).

The club also voted to host a 2X3 cabinet meeting in Copperas Cove on Oct. 17-18.

Lion Linda Lapierre volunteered to head the planning committee for this event.
