Timothy Smith, 44, is the general manager at H-E-B Plus! in Copperas Cove.

Where are you from originally?

Wichita Falls.

What do you enjoy most about working in Cove?

I really enjoy the fact that Copperas Cove is a small-knit community and the relationships that I’ve built here with the city. It’s really a partnership we’ve got here. I know the mayor on a first name basis, I know the city manager on a first name basis, and it’s always been about how we can help partner each other and help each other be successful.

How long have you worked for H-E-B?

I’ve worked for the company since 2007. Before becoming general manager at this one (in Copperas Cove), I worked at another store. This will be my fourth year here.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

We definitely have high standards as far as the company is concerned, but it’s not just about reaching the numbers or reaching a goal. There’s a work/life balance that’s nothing like where I was before. It’s a great company to work for they truly have a passion for people.

Who or what is an inspiration to you?

I read a lot of leadership novels, and I’m a spiritual person. T.D. Jakes is a pastor of a mega-church in Dallas, and I utilize him a lot for my inspiration as well. And, of course, my faith in God.

Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?

I’m on the board of the (Cove) Chamber of Commerce, and I’m involved in the United Way campaign. I’m also heavily involved in developing a relationship with Cove and Cove House (emergency homeless shelter) as well as The Refuge Corporation.

Tell me about your family.

I have two boys. Tim Jr. is 17 years old and Taylor Christian is 12. My wife, Theresa, and I have been married for 21 years. I met my wife while going to school. We both went to the same college back home, Midwestern State University.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

Hands down, my favorite is Hawaii, followed closely by New York City. I like Hawaii because of the pristine white sandy beaches, the pristine water and the laid-back atmosphere. Hawaii has several different islands you can go to, and I like the big city experience of New York.

What was the best advice you were ever given? Who gave it to you?

It had to have come from my dad. My dad really believed in me and truly believed that I could do anything I put my mind to. And that’s just not a cliché, he really did. He pushed me as a young man to do more than what my friends were doing, and he really kept after me even through college. I have to say he’s been one of my biggest inspirations and one of my biggest motivators as well.

If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?

I spent 18 years in retail and during that time I worked for one of H-E-B’s competitors. If I could change anything, I would love to have had those 18 years with H-E-B versus where I was actually at.
