Copperas Cove Fire Chief Burney Baskett was sworn into office by Municipal Judge Bill Price on Monday at the police station.

Baskett has spent 32 years in firefighting. He worked with the Arlington Fire Department for 22 years before becoming the Hillsboro fire chief for six years. He then took the South Padre Island chief position, where he served for five years.

The city was without a fire chief for nine months. Sean Hughes left the department in October after serving nearly six months. Hughes replaced Mike Baker, who retired from the department in February 2012.

“I am looking forward to helping the department and the city grow and enhancing the services to residents,” Baskett said at his swearing-in ceremony.
