The Copperas Cove Noon Lions Club raised more than $5,300 at its annual golf tournament earlier this month.

The money raised will help with its eye-care program and other youth community programs in Cove. It also will help with its summer camp program for children with disabilities.

Boss Lion Linda Lapierre presented the donation request to Camp Bluebonnet, the nonprofit day camp led by parents of children with Type I diabetes and their siblings. The club voted to donate $100.

The club also presented the traditional start-up donation of $100 to the newly-formed Killeen Ladies Lions on their charter night, which also was a success. A donation also was made to Project Graduation of $500 for a safe graduation prom night for seniors at Cove High School.

Lapierre announced her inability to lead the club next year due to career changes. Secretary Morris also will be resigning. The club is in immediate need of a first vice president, second vice president and a secretary for the fall.

Upcoming events include the 2X3 Convention this weekend and the Leos convention April 19. Both will be attended by club members.

A letter requesting donations to back Mike Butler for his vice presidential campaign during the upcoming international elections in Canada were passed on by the club after discussion.

Guest speaker Polo Enrique of the Economic Development Corporation spoke to the club about EDC’s operations, successes and future plans.

Among the EDC’s successes was the opening of the assisted living center, Stoney Brook, an $8.2 million facility, and the realignment of Old Copperas Cove Road, which was completed in July. Future projects include attracting light industry and a continued focus on business retention, Enrique said.
